Women Empowerment

When women – especially those from ethnic minorities – became leaders in their village, transformation can be felt in the entire community. In many projects, Heifer gives training to women and helps them start women Self-Help Groups so that they can improve their skills and enjoy a higher status. We also bring women in the area together to support each other. When they team up with other women, they can wield more influence, build the community and regain their confidence.

Waqi Wuniu from the Yi minority lives in Puti village in Zhaojue County in Liangshan Prefecture, Sichuan Province. She got infected by her husband who took drugs and died from AIDS, leaving her a 36-year-old widow. Although her health is worsening, she struggles hard to make a living and looks after her three children alone. After receiving help from Heifer, she began raising pigs and worked at improving her rearing skills. Her pig herd grew larger and her income rose. Wuniu became more optimistic and confident. Whenever she saw her neighbors, friends or family in trouble, she selflessly gave them some of her pigs. She really lives the spirit of Heifer’s “Sharing and Caring” Cornerstone and has won the respect of the whole village!
