For families to achieve a sustainable livelihood over the long-term, we must improve the market competitiveness of their farm products by helping them directly engage in agribusiness activities other than production. When the Self-Help Groups become mature, Heifer helped grouped them together to form cooperatives so that the farmers can gain collective bargaining power, save production cost, and gather information on market demand. We also guide them to establish eco-friendly enterprises that suit the local conditions so that they can widen profit margins and build a stable source of income.

Heifer has helped establish 1,277 Self-Help Groups and 103 Cooperatives in China. Many have become reputable local brands, including Nanjiang yellow goats, Jiangjin eco-chickens, Huoshan black pigs, Longling yellow goats, and Shangri-La “watermelon” pigs.

The project families of Sanfang village in Jiange County, Guangyuan City in Sichuan Province set up the “Jiange Hongyu Specialized Chicken Cooperative” a few years ago. Besides registering its own trademark, the cooperative members also developed an anti-counterfeiting packaging. To expand sales, they bought shares of a restaurant that serves native chicken and opened direct sales outlets so as to collect market information to guide their production. They also started selling processed chicken offal and offering slaughtering services as ways to make extra income. With rising chicken prices and a stable market, more families began to raise chickens. In just half year, the village produced 30,000 chickens, earning about RMB1.8 million and bringing the farmers about RMB500,000 of profit. The cooperative has truly helped the villagers achieve sustainable development.
