Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province is one of regions which are most affected by drug abuse and HIV infection in China. Communities suffer from high rates of poverty, with average annual family income of under RMB1500.
This project provides pigs to 80 project families in Gudu Village and focuses on helping Yi women improve their social status through trainings and awareness advocacy. Heifer encourages these women to represent their families in Self-help Groups. Training on Self-help Group operation, livestock management, HIV/AIDS prevention, hygiene and health and environmental protection are provided, aiming to help the project families increase their income, improve the quality of living and provide an equitable development for women and people infected by HIV/AIDS. The goal is to help the community find a sustainable way to develop the economy and to build up social harmony. Another 160 families will benefit from passing on the gift from this project.
