Yuexi County, a country-designated county of poverty, is located in southwest part of Anhui province, a mountainous area with only 5% area available for cropping. There is a population of 398,000 farming with only 0.09 acre per capita and the net income is USD202 per capita in average. Within the two villages that are to receive the aid, there is a population of 5,322 in 1310 households, of which 1,605 have an income of less than USD105. The project assists families whose net incomes fall below the average.
Yuexi is a county with abundant grass resource. In 2003, Government has already invested USD610,000 to improve 7,400 acre of grassland. Yet, due to scattered nature of the cropland, draft cattle are needed to be used to plow. Families can lend out their draft cattle for plowing and earn money from it.
This project provides each of the 50 families in two villages with beef cattle, along with training and agriculture equipments and supplies, such as cattle stable repair subsidy, grass seed, medicine and related medical instruments.
