Poverty Alleviation Project in Nanjiang & Tongjiang

Tongjiang and Nanjiang County are state-designated poor counties in Dabashan mountain area. Due to the remote geographical location, diversified landscapes, sparsely located population, poorly development in communications and infrastructure, people there seldom have communications with outside and the economic development of the area remains slow.
This project assists 260 families in Nanjiang and Tongjiang counties by providing fine-breed goats, sows, piglets and cattle adaptable to the local situation. Training in group management, livestock production management and environmental protection, as well as Heifer Cornerstones and gender justice are provided to project families. At least one participant from each community is trained as a community animal health worker. The project only increases the income of the communities, but also the participants' organizational capacity by strengthening cooperation and developing co-development among them and fostering their joint problem-solving skills. Another 360 families will benefit by "Passing on the Gift" within five years.
