Poverty Alleviation Project in Dabashan Area

In the mountainous Dabashan area of Sichuan Province, poverty is a way of life for many of the farm families. This project will assist 200 farm families in the area, providing a total of 900 goats, 140 cows and 3,500 chickens. Three project communities and self-help groups will be formed in the underdeveloped villages, providing participants with training in group management, livestock production management and protecting the environment, as well as the Heifer Cornerstones and gender justice. At least one participant from each community will be trained as a village animal health worker. The project will not only increase the incomes of the communities, but also their organizational capacity by strengthening cooperation, developing an understanding of co-development and helping to resolve problems. Another 400 families will benefit through “passing on the gift” within five years.
