The availability and cleanliness of drinking water is a major issue in China’s Qinghai Province. In its first year, this project will build a community drinking water system in Lianxing to improve access for humans and livestock. One hundred eighty families will receive dairy or beef cattle, along with veterinary supplies, grass seeds and tree seedlings. Each participant will also receive a solar cooker to reduce manure consumption, improve soil fertility and promote kitchen hygiene. Participants will form self-help groups for project management, trainings and group activities. Another 180 families will benefit through “passing on the gift.”
This project will focus on income generation, drinking water availability, clean and high efficient energy utilization and environmental protection as well. The project also finances the recipients to improve livestock barns, to plant grass and trees for fodder and environmental protection. Certain technical services and veterinary supplies will be provided to the recipients to improve their raising skills. One water supply system will be built to resolve the main problem of 46 villagers in one community. In the second year, Heifer China and local partners will work with the government of Ledu County to build other water supply systems for the other recipients. Environment related and sustainable approaches training will also be provided to ensure the whole target community understand and appropriately apply the above mentioned techniques and approaches.
