Liannan Yao Autonomous County Beef Cattle Project

Located in the northwest part of Guangdong province, Liannan Yao Antonomous County is 80% mountainous. It has a population of 156,000, 52% of which are Yao ethnic people. The per capita arable land is only 0.05 arces, which can barely meet the basic needs of the families.
This project will provide 232 female beef cattle and eight bulls to 80 families from Tanglikeng Village and Wangdongping Village, which are among the poorest villages in the entire province. Each family will receive three cattle and basic veterinary medicine.
In the project, Heifer China will work with the County Agricultural Bureau and YWCA Guangzhou to organize a community-based cattle raising farmer group in each village. Group leaders will be provided leadership training and farmers will be able to exchange their experience and knowledge and solve common problems together as a group. Marketing information will also be shared during the group meetings.
In order to improve the environment and hygiene standards of the villages, each recipient family will receive USD150 to construct a bio-gas system, including a generator and new toilet.
