Gongbujiangda County, Linzhi Prefecture of the TAR is located in eastern Tibet on the southern side of the Naqing Tangla mountain range, on the northern side of Yalong River. The extreme cold, coupled with severe and erratic weather patterns, has produced harsh ecological conditions in the region. Transportation is very underdeveloped, mostly by horses or yaks.  Social centers and markets are remote and accessible by limited infrastructure; many participants are able to “go to town” only once a year. Communication with outsiders is very limited.

This project will provide 5,000 Tibetan pigs and 200 local dairy cows to 200 impoverished Tibetan households in Gongbujiangda County. The recipient farmers will form self-help groups and receive trainings on animal management, holistic community development, gender equity and HIV/AIDS awareness. Increased capacity in the targeted communities will guide the way for long-term sustainable development. Another 200 families will benefit from “passing on the gifts.”
