What is Read to Feed?

Heifer International developed Read to Feed as a practical tool to promote literacy and global education while empowering children to make a difference in the world by raising money to help others through reading.
Read to Feed is a program which inspires children to read books within a certain period (normally 4-6 weeks) and raise money by finding sponsors (e.g. family members and friends) for each book they read. Pledge per book can be set by sponsors or sponsors can give a one-off sponsorship to children for their participation in Read to Feed program.
Schools, churches and other organizations are welcome to join the program. The program timeline can be set by organizations on their own but is suggested to match with existing reading program, community services and other civic education activities.

How does Heifer invest my money?

Donation will be used for purchasing livestock and provide training for the recipients. As a result, the recipients can have food with improved nutrition, income increase and become self-reliant. Families have to keep their promise of "Passing on the Gift" , by sharing one or more of their animal's offspring or the equivalent value of the animal with other families in need. Families can enjoy dignity in helping others in need. Just like a small rock dropped into water that ripples outward, children's donation set off a chain of giving that transforms many more lives and enables more families to become self-reliant.
